For cleaning and maintaining the board, please see the following:
Daily Cleaning (After Each Use)
- Scrape: Use a bench scraper or the flat side of a knife to remove food debris within 5 minutes of use.
- Wash: Use warm water, a small amount of mild dish soap, and a soft sponge or brush to scrub the entire board (both sides).
- Rinse: Thoroughly rinse with hot water.
- Dry: Immediately dry with a towel, then stand the board upright to air-dry completely to ensure even drying and prevent warping.
Deep Cleaning & Sanitising (Weekly or After Raw Meat)
- Lemon and Salt Method: Sprinkle coarse salt (or baking soda) over the board, then use half a lemon (cut side down) to scrub the surface. Squeeze the lemon while scrubbing to release juice. Let it sit for 5–15 minutes before rinsing.
- Vinegar Rinse: To sanitise after cutting raw meat, wipe the board with a solution of 50% white vinegar and 50% water. Let it sit for 5 minutes, then rinse.
- Baking Soda Paste: For stubborn stains or odours, mix 1 part baking soda with 3 parts water to create a paste, scrub, and rinse.Maintenance and Conditioning
- Oiling: Apply food-safe mineral oil or beeswax board cream every 3–4 weeks (or when the wood looks dry) to create a protective barrier. Avoid cooking oils (olive oil, vegetable oil) as they can turn rancid.
- Sanding: If the board becomes rough or heavily scratched, sand it lightly with 180-240 grit sandpaper, then re-oil.
